Former grand slam champion Victoria Azarenka is one step closer to returning to the WTA tour after she won her custody battle in court in California.
The ruling from the judge means that the case will no longer be decided in California or anywhere in the US. Azarenka, who is a citizen of Belarus, felt that the case belongs in Belarus, where she was awarded primary custody by a Belarusian Court.
This court win means that the Azarenka can now travel with her baby, Leo and could lead to a return the tour. However Billy Mckeague, Leo’s dad, now has three weeks to appeal the decision, which could lead more to more complications in the case. Despite this Azarenka’s camp is confident that they can maintain victory after the Judge’s 65 page opinion on the matter.
The hope for Azarenka now is to return to Belarus and form a good partnership between her and Mr Mckeague as they look to continue being good parents to their son, Leo.
Victoria Azarenka’s last tournament was at Wimbledon, where she went out in the fourth round to current world number one, Simona Halep.
