Nick Kyrgios reached his first ATP World Tour Final in Australia after he overcame Grigor Dimitrov 3-6 6-1 6-4 in Brisbane.
The controversial Australian hit 19 aces en route to victory against the world number three as he managed to beat him for the very first time in his career.
Another positive for Kyrgios is that for the third consecutive match he came back from a set down to seal victory, which must be seen as a good omen heading into the Australian Open.
The world number 21’s victory means that he has become the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt in 2014 to reach the Brisbane final.
In the final Kyrgios will play American Ryan Harrison and the young Australian realises the threat he is up against tomorrow, “I know that he’s a dangerous opponent. He can serve very, very well and he’s obviously won a lot of matches here. “
The common theme throughout the contest was the way Kyrgios continued to mix things up on return and it seemed to work as he grabbed the second set in 29 minutes, which stunned the Bulgarian.
Kyrgios continued his variety in the third set and as a result broke in the seventh game to close the match out. The Australian admitted that he needed to mix things up if he wanted to beat Dimitrov, “I knew that I had to do something a little bit different today. I couldn’t give him too much rhythm today.”
Nick Kyrgios will play Ryan Harrison in the final at 7pm local time, with the Australian leading the head to head 2-0.
