Grigor Dimitrov battled past Kyle Edmund in what turned out to be a Brisbane classic after a 6-3 6-7(3) 6-4 victory to advance to the Semi-Finals.

The Bulgarian displayed a mix of creativity, sportsmanship and athleticism as he survived a tough test in Kyle Edmund. The first set was especially good from Dimitrov as he pulled of some magical shot making to unlock the Edmund serve.

After saving two break points, the world number three broke in the eighth game as he would eventually seal the opening set, 6-3 in 37 minutes.

Despite a seemingly comfortable first set, the Brit took lots of positives and confidence as he continued to pound his forehand into Dimitrov. The Brit’s first serve percentage continued to thrive throughout the first set as Dimitrov tried his best to neutralise the massive Edmund forehand and other weapons in his tennis arsenal.

The world number 50 managed to save a couple of break points in the ninth game with authority as he eventually took the second set into a tiebreak. Despite some stunning point construction from the Bulgarian, Edmund capitalised on some Dimitrov mistakes as he took the tiebreak, 7-3 in some fashion:

The third set continued to produce high quality tennis as the Brisbane were treated to some late night drama as both men continued the accurate serving stats. However there would be a twist in the tale as Edmund rolled his ankle in the first point of the ninth game. He screamed in pain and even claimed he felt a crack in his ankle.

Dimitrov showed his sportsmanship qualities and helped Edmund to his chair to receive some treatment on the ankle, he even jumped over the net:

After Edmund received his medical time out, play continued and Dimitrov showed his athletic qualities to put the pressure on the Brit. The pressure proved costly as Edmund lost the next two games as Dimitrov sealed his place into the Semi-Finals.

Grigor Dimitrov once again proved that he is a well respected figure on and off the tennis court as he displayed his sportsmanship qualities.

It was a thrilling match but in the end the world number three survived a tough battle and has earned a Semi-Final match against Nick Kyrgios.
