Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova reckons former World No. 1 and defending champion Serena Williams, who gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in September can win her 24th Grand Slam title next month in Melbourne.
Kuznetsova, who will not be competing in 2018’s maiden Major in Australia due to a wrist injury, was in conversation with Russian website Sport Express where she argued in favor of Serena’s return to the WTA tour.
Kuznetsova, a winner of the US Open in 2004 and the French Open in 2009, said that she was expecting Serena to be on the ball from the first strike itself and she felt there’s no reason why Serena can’t win the Aussie Open in January.
“No. Serena has repeatedly argued that with her proper attitude she can accomplish her goals. She is helped very much by the belief that she is stronger than all her rivals. Serena is a special person, and she can present a surprise at any time.”
She disclosed that she did follow Serena’s wedding, though on a social network.
“I saw pictures on Instagram. I think it was fun. A lot of beautiful elite guests came to the wedding. But this is understandable – Serena should have everything at a good level.”
On being asked, if she ever felt scared by Serena, Kuznetsova replied: “I’m afraid of very few people. But when I come up and touch her biceps, I think: “Yes, it’s really better not to fight with her.”
“Of course, she is very strong. But you can look at it from different sides. For example, it’s amazing how she and her body can move around the court. I will never forget how she after a break came to Australia, and she was at least 15 extra pounds, and she managed to win that tournament.”
