Indian tennis superstar Sania Mirza has claimed that 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams will make a strong comeback to WTA tour.
Serena, the reigning Australian Open champion gave birth to daughter Alexis Olympia in September and wed her long-time beau, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in November before making a public announcement of her willingness to participate in next month’s Australian Open in Melbourne. In fact, the American’s name figured prominently in the tournament’s entry list.
And now Sania, the former World No. 1 doubles has backed her to accomplish more glory upon her return on the women’s circuit.
“She is phenomenal. Steffi Graf and Serena proved that women could play, and at the same time, maintain their families. They are our inspiration,” Sania said.
On a different note, Mirza, who will be missing the Aussie Open due to a right knee injury, said that she will be using her forced break from the game to spend some quality time with her husband, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
“I have got a break after almost 15 years, which is in a way good… We (Sania and Shoaib Malik) have had a seven-year married life, but didn’t spend much time together. Shoaib is busy with cricket and I’m with tennis. Now I’m spending some time with him. Last month we were in Bangladesh and we’ll be going to Dubai on December 21.”
However, Sania insisted that she will back to perform her national duties during the Commonwealth Games (April 4 to 15) and Asian Games (August 18 – September 2) in 2018. “Hopefully, I will be okay before Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.”
