Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro’s coach Sebastin Prieto is extremely satisfied with the way how his charge is playing at the moment, claiming that the Tower of Tandil is looking forward to having a successful season in 2018. Sending a warning to his rivals, including the Big 4 Prieto said that Del Potro is fully fit and is ready to challenge them for top honors next season.
Del Potro appointed Prieto after trying out a number of coaches and his association with Prieto yielded results almost immediately. Since the former World No. 4 began working with Prieto, he made it to the semifinals of the US Open after upsetting Roger Federer in the quarters, reached the last 4 in Shanghai, progressed to the final in Basel and won the title in Stockholm.
Coach Prieto is immensely proud of how their new partnership has progressed so far. Prieto said: “He is a very calm person, relaxed day-by-day, but focused and strict with himself when it comes to work. He is a top player in terms of work ethic and mental status”.
Prieto added: “He set goals, built a team, and good results help to keep motivated. We only worked for two months, starting at US Open, preparing for the last Grand Slam of the year. Then we trained in Buenos Aires for a week, and we travelled for the last swing”
Looking forward to the new season, Prieto said: “I think the goal is that he can be healthy physically and is able to compete in a good form for the whole year. The upcoming pre-season is important, as it is a good base for the whole season. He should play like he did in recent times, for the whole year.”
