This week in Paris, Lukasz Kubot made his dream come true as he became the new world number one in doubles as he won the doubles title with Marcelo Melo. This week has capped off an amazing season for the duo as they won their sixth title of 2017.
Kubot’s achievement of becoming the new world number is a landmark achievement for Polish tennis as it is the first time that Poland has had a world number one in tennis. The 35 year old, who reached the Wimbledon Quarter-Finals in 2013 as a singles player, has thrived as a doubles player and has become pioneers for new Polish talent to come through.
The Polish veteran was part of the Davis Cup team that reached the World Group in 2016 and has inspired new talent to come through. He has seen Jerzy Janowicz come through the ranks and be successful as well as falling short of becoming Poland’s next grand slam champion.
However Kubot was not the only Polish player to be successful in tennis this week as there were four players in tennis finals on Sunday. Hubert Hurkacz reached the final in the Shenzhen challenger, where he beat world number 99 Blaz Kavcic en route to the final. Also Jerzy Janowicz came through a strong field to reach the Eckental final where he narrowly lost to Maximilian Marterer.
Also the likes of Pawel Cias who are struggling to fund their own career, won the ITF futures event in Sharm El Sheikh. Also Poland’s second best male player at the moment Kamil Majchrzak played his first main draw match in Antalya this year, proving he has what it takes on all surfaces. These young players are making an impression on Kubot and other Polish veterans who are willing the next generation of Polish tennis players on.
