Former World No.1 Carlos Moya has given his opinion on David Goffin. Goffin recently competed in the Nitto ATP Finals, where he defeated Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Roger Federer, before losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the final. The Belgian is set to anchor his country’s bid for a first David Cup title. They take on France over the weekend.
Moya: “It was a little bit surprising. It’s the first time that he beat him and he must be given a lot of credit for beating Rafa and Federer.”
Goffin joins a select group of players to have defeated Nadal and Federer in the same tournament. He became the first player since Nikolay Davydenko to defeat them both at the season-ending finals. The likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Juan Martin del Potro have also defeated the pair in the same event.
Moya helped Spain win the Davis Cup in 2004, defeating Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish in crucial singles matches at Spain edged the USA 3-2. Moya now works with World No.1 Rafael Nadal as his main coach following Toni Nadal’s move to manage his nephew’s academy in Mallorca.
David Goffin, is joined in the Belgian team by Steve Darcis, Arthur De Greef, and Ruben Bemelmans. It is mostly the same team that played Great Britain in the Davis Cup Final of 2015. The only change sees Arthur De Greef replace Kimmer Coppejans.
They will face a French team that includes Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Lucas Pouille, and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Veteran doubles specialist Nicolas Mahut was controversially dropped by France captain Yannick Noah when announcing the teams earlier.
