Rafael Nadal is the King of Clay having won Roland Garros ten times. He has also won all of the other grand slam titles at least once. Yet the Spanish legend still has one major title that eludes him. The ATP World Tour Finals.
Nadal has already won Roland Garros and the US Open this year, so has qualified for the event. The ATP World Tour Finals is an event held at the end of the year featuring the eight players who have accumulated the most ATP points over the course of the season.
Nadal “I never won the World Tour Finals so I would like to do it, but seven other players want it too.”
Nadal has qualified for most of the events since 2005, but missed his debut that year due to injury. He has since missed out on the event a further four times despite having featured in the World’s top eight each year that injury did not play a major part.
In years when Nadal has featured in the tournament, he has sometimes struggled. He has reached the final twice, losing to longtime friend and rival Roger Federer in 2010, and to Novak Djokovic in 2013. Nadal has also lost twice in the round-robin stage. He lost all three of his matches to Novak Djokovic, Robin Soderling, and Nikolay Davydenko in 2009. In 2011 he defeated Mardy Fish, but then was thrashed by Federer before losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
