The prospect of trying to balance life on the tour with a new baby is a task that Serena Williams is fully capable of, according to Caroline Wozniacki.
Williams hasn’t played on the tour since winning the Australian Open in January. On September 1st she gave birth to her first child, a baby girl called Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Despite just becoming a mother, the 35-year-old is aiming to return to competitive tennis at the start of 2018 in order to defend her Australian Open title.
“Serena, I think she can be focused on both (the baby and tennis).” Wozniacki told reporters in Wuhan on Monday.
“I think she’s going to do a strong comeback but I think at the same time she’s enjoying being a mum as well and getting that whole experience. I think it’s very special.”
Wozniacki is a close friend of Williams. Last year in an interview with CNN, the former world No.1 described the Dane as one of her ‘true friends’ who is always honest with her.
“She’s one of my true friends that will tell me the truth no matter what because she doesn’t have anything to gain or to lose, and that’s what I love about her.” Said Williams.
Whilst there is a close bond between the two, Wozniacki is yet to see baby Alexis due to her commitments on the tour. Last week the 27-year-old won the Toray Pacific Open, ending her run of losing in six consecutive WTA Finals. Nevertheless, Williams has been sending her pictures of Alexis.
“She’s so cute and I’m looking forward to meeting her,” said Wozniacki.
Next year Williams will be bidding to become one of the few players who have won a grand slam title after giving birth. Joining the likes of Kim Clijsters, Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong.
As Williams enjoys maternity leave from the tour, Wozniacki will play in this week’s Wuhan Open. Receiving a bye in the first round, she will start her campaign against Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari.
