Kyle Edmund eased past an uninspired Bernard Tomic today in Shenzhen with a 6-4 6-2 victory on his return from injury.

The Brit, who played his first match since injuring his Neck at the US Open to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, hit 9 aces against the Controversial Australian as he broke three times en route to victory. Edmund certainly impressed on serve as he won 92% of his first 1st service points to beat Tomic in 1 hour and 2 minutes. A very good win for Edmund who is still yet to fulfil his potential of becoming a top 20 player. As for Tomic another pathetic performance now means he will at least be at 161 in the World when the ATP rankings are released on Monday. Kyle Edmund will now play Jared Donaldson in the second round.

In other results, Borna Coric’s struggles continue as he was ousted by Argentinian Guido Pella 6-4 7-6(2). The one break of serve in the first set was enough to seal the match as Pella recorded his 35th win of the season. As for Coric he continues his poor form from Russia last week, where he also lost in the first round. Pella will now play top seed Dominic Thiem in the second round.

7th seed Viktor Troicki was eliminated from Shenzhen as he lost a tight battle to the erratic Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-3 2-6 6-2. In a sensational match, where 24 break point opportunities where created between the two men, it was Basilashvili who was more clinical and secured five breaks of serve to seal a match with Taylor Fritz in round two.

The longest match of the day has to go to Marcos Baghdatis and Vasek Posipisil, who battled it out in 2 hours and 46 minutes. The Cypriot, who is now ranked 113th in the World rankings, defeated the Canadian 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-4 to book his place into the second round. The 32 year old was clinical as he broke three out of the four opportunities he had to seal a confidence boosting win. He will now play Peter Gojowczyk or Leonardo Mayer in the second round.

Here are the other results from today’s action:

Yen-Hsun Lu beats Mikael Ymer 6-2 6-3

Denis Istomin beats Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 7-6(3)
