Mother nature has struck the US Open in New York with full force as rain forced the cancellation of the majority of matches scheduled to get underway on the second day of the tournament.
A total of 64 singles matches was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 32 in each draw. Now the only matches guaranteed to take place are the ones scheduled to be held inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which has a roof. Both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play on that court on Tuesday.
“Due to the current weather forecast, which predicts continuous rain throughout the remainder of the day, the Tuesday day session, No. 3, has now been canceled for all matches outside of Arthur Ashe Stadium. All matches scheduled for Arthur Ashe Stadium will continue as planned.” The USTA said in a statement.
On the outside courts, a total of three women’s matches managed to finish before the bad weather struck Flushing Meadows. Romania’s Sorana Cirstea fired four aces during her 6-1, 6-3, win over Lesley Kerkhove, who was making her grand slam debut. The Romanian is bidding to go beyond the second round in New York this year for the first time since 2009.
23rd seed Barbora Strycova broke Misaki Doi six consecutive times during her dominating 6-1, 6-3, win. The Czech, who is yet to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, hit 12 winners compared to 15 unforced errors. A stark contrast to Doi’s tally of eight and 24.
Completing the trio of winners is Yanina Wickmayer. The Belgian proved too strong for 28th seed Lesia Tsurenko, prevailing 6-3, 6-1, after 83 minutes of play.
Due to the weather, Wednesday is expected to feature the remainder of day two’s matches as well as 32 from the second round. The order of play is yet to be released.
