Eugenie Bouchard is out of the Rogers Cup after losing to Donna Vekic 6-3 6-4 in front of her own Canadian crowd.
Both players lacked a good first serve percentage to really dominate the match on this slow Toronto hard court as there were nine breaks of serve in the match. The Croatian just had too much for Bouchard and broke her serve in the ninth game to take the first set 6-3.
The Canadian managed to dictate play more in the second set and even broke for a 2-1 lead early on. However Vekic managed to compose herself and break back in the next game. There was more stability in the second set from the server as both players played with a bit more aggression. Despite her frustrations, Vekic eventually broke in the tenth game to take the match in 1 hour and 34 minutes. The Croatian qualifier will now play third seed Angelique Kerber in the second round.
Wimbledon doubles champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina are into the second round of the singles after impressive victories over Shuai Peng and Alison Riske respectively. Makarova, who won Washington last week, broke 46% of the time in her match as she brushed aside Shuai Peng 6-1 6-3 to advance to the second round. She will now play 7th seed Johanna Konta next.
Her fellow Russian Elena Vesnina was also victorious today as she beat Alison Riske 6-3 6-3. The 16th seed won 88% of first service points as she convincingly beat the American and moved into the second round. She will now play Ashleigh Barty next, who won the first five games of her match before her opponent Oceane Dodin retired.
There were also wins for Cici Bellis, Magdalena Rybarikova and Caroline Garcia. Bellis beat Washington finalist Julia Goerges 4-6 6-3 6-2 in a two hour epic. Rybarikova was victorious over Mirjana Lucic-Baron 7-5 6-0, while Garcia beat a gritty Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-7(4) 6-4.
