World number one Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Montreal masters due to injury. The news means that Rafael Nadal can become the new World number one next week if he reaches the Semi-Finals.
The Brit has failed to recover from his injury that he suffered in his Wimbledon Quarter-Final defeat to Sam Querrey. He revealed that he suffered a hip injury and it was confirmed that he will miss the Montreal masters as he is still recovering. Here is what he had to say about the injury:
‘I am sad to be missing the tournament in Montreal because I have many great memories from my time in Canada. I am doing everything I can to return as quickly as possible.’
It is obvious that Murray wants to be at his optimum best to compete to win trophies again, this announcement today puts his US Open participation at risk. He joins Marin Cilic on the sidelines, who announced his withdrawal earlier on today. Here is what tournament director Eugene Tapierre had to say:
‘We would have liked for Andy to be able to defend his title that he won here in 2015, but we wish him a very speedy recovery and to Marin Cilic as well following his great run at Wimbledon.’
Today’s announcement also means that Rafael Nadal will be top seed next week and could be World number one again if he reaches the Semi-Finals in Canada next week.
