In the first set, Federer found himself down 0-1 and 0-40. The seven-time Wimbledon champion saved those three break points, but he eventually lost the game by netting a forehand. In the next game, though, Federer broke back when Lajovic missed a forehand long. He then consolidated to love for 2-2.
8 quick service holds later, the set went to a tiebreak. Federer out-rallied Lajovic on the first point to take a mini-break. He then won the subsequent six points, winning the tiebreak 7-0 for the first set.
Lajovic, serving from down 1-2 in the second, got broken by whiffing on an overhead volley. After Federer held to 15 for a 4-1 lead, Lajovic fell behind 0-40, but fought off the three break points with two unreturned serves and a big smash.
The players exchanged holds for 5-3, and then Federer held to 15 on an inside-out forehand winner, taking a two-sets-to-none lead.
In the first game of Set 3, Federer broke Lajovic at 30. He went on to consolidate to 15. Lajovic then fought off a break point to trail 1-2, down a break.
After another Federer hold, Lajovic lost his serve again on a forehand into the net. This put Federer up 4-1 with the ball in hand. Federer then held to love by putting a short ball away with his forehand.
Up 5-1, Federer decided to break out the SABR. It was unsuccessful. Still, he would serve for the match leading 5-2. The No. 3 seed held to love, finishing the match off with a ace up the T.
Federer’s third-round opponent will be serve-and-volleyer Mischa Zverev, who Thursday won a five-set battle over Mikhail Kukushkin.
