New Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza was satisfied and delighted in her press conference as she dispatched Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final today.

The Spaniard spoke after her 7-5 6-0 victory over Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final and spoke about how satisfying it is to produce such a good performance on the big stage, ‘Well, I am very satisfied because I never knew how it was going to go because I was very nervous, you know, tense.  I wanted it to go my way.  I was doing everything I could to be prepared. Once you step on the court, you know, you see the crowd, you see the final, you see I’m here playing another Wimbledon final.  So very satisfied the way I handled it.’

She also spoke about the turning point in the match where she went 5-4 down in the first set and had to save two set points, ‘You know what, nothing went through my mind.  I was expecting the best Venus, because I saw her, and she was playing very good.  I knew she was going to, you know, make me suffer and fight for it. When I had those set points against me, I’m like, Hey, it’s normal.  I’m playing Venus here.  It’s not… So I just keep fighting.  And I knew that if I was playing like I was playing during the two weeks, I was going to have eventually an opportunity.  So I was, like, calm.  If I lose the first set, I still have two more. Let’s not make a drama, you know.’

The world number 15, who will now become the new world number five on Monday also spoke exclusively about the burden of her Roland Garros title defence last May, ‘Yeah, it’s not easy.  It’s very good when you win it, and it’s hard after when you come back and you know you have to defend it.  But that’s a good problem to have. It was tough obviously, because you know you have a lot of matches to go.  You wanted the trophy back. But I’m happy to be in this situation.  You know, I’m happy that once again I see myself winning a Grand Slam, something that is so hard to do.  It means a lot. It means a lot of confidence, like you said.’

It is obvious that the Muguruza is in a better place now and back to her smiling and confident self. No matter who is in front of the Spaniard she can be undefeatable at times given any surface. The question remains can the Spaniard gain the consistency to cement her own legacy in the sport.
