In a recent interview World number 70 Alexandr Dolgopolov has slammed Maria Sharapova for doping last year and claims that she needs to be more careful next time.
The Ukranian, who has won three titles in his career was asked about the controversial Russian in a recent interview with SovSport. In the interview he suggested that what Sharapova was banned for last year was doping and that she needed to be more careful when dealing with these situations. This is what Dolgopolov had to say on the issue:
‘If Meldonium is in the prohibited list, then it is doping. She said she hadn’t known about it but my team is 3x less than her team (only two people) and we always check everything and follow all the changes’
It is clear that the Ukranian feels strongly on the matter and is clear that he blames Sharapova for not reading her emails and claims that the Russian was banned for doping. The matter still continues as the USTA will announce soon if Maria Sharapova deserves a wildcard into the US Open.
Alexandr Dolgopolov and Maria Sharapova both have tournaments this week. The Ukrainian is in Kitzbuhel for the last clay court tournament of the season as he plays Thomaz Bellucci in the first round. While Sharapova will be competing in Stanford this week where she will play Jennifer Brady in the first round.
