Stan Wawrinka got off to a shaky start but after winning a first set tiebreak, his third round match was never in doubt. The No. 3 seed defeated Fabio Fognini 7-6, 6-0, 6-2 on Suzanne-Lenglen Court.
Fognini got off to a good start against Wawrinka breaking him twice in the first set mixing in a good combination of ground strokes, volleys and lobs. Up 6-5 he had four set points but was unable to convert. Instead it was the three time grand slam winner who finally converted his sixth opportunity. In the tiebreak the two players had a great back and forth rally which ended with Fognini missing an overhead and throwing his racquet to the ground in disgust. He went on to lost the set and it was all downhill from that moment on.
After a 54 minute opening set, Wawrinka needed just 57 minutes to win the final two sets dropping just two games in the process.
Fognini, a new father just two weeks ago, was broken three times in the second set and never won a game. He took a medical timeout after being down 0-3. His serve let him down in the match as well. He was just 53 percent with his first ball and he double faulted seven times.
Wawrinka broke the Italian seven times in all, finished with six aces and 27 winners and plenty of confidence heading into his next match. He has failed to drop a set in the tournament and is on a six match winning streak on clay. Wawrinka is now 5-1 in his career against Fogging including a win in the same tournament and same round seven years ago.
He will next play the winner of the all French affair between Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet currently taking place.
