LONDON: Shortly after withdrawing from the Aegon Championships, British No.4 Aljaz Bedene remains uncertain about his Wimbledon appearance.
On Monday a scan revealed an issue with his right wrist, forcing him to skip his planned meeting with Andy Murray. Since the French Open the Brit has contended with the pain in his wrist, which had gradually worsened over time.
“I had problems during the French Open. It didn’t get any better, so yesterday I had an MRI, which shows an injury on the right wrist.” Bedene told Ubitennis. “I’m trying to skip that tournament and see if it improves in the next week or so.”
The setback occurs less than two week’s before the start of Wimbledon, where Bedene lost in the second round last year. Whilst he is maintaining a positive outlook, alarm bells are ringing. Especially when the pain he is currently experiencing is not intermittent. Indicating a potentially bigger issue for him to solve.
“(the) Pain is always there. Luckily I’m not taking any pills, so we’ll see if I have to take some pills for Wimbledon. I really want to play Wimbledon.” He said.
Yesterday Bedene took to the practice courts in London and spoke confidently with the media shortly after. He didn’t mention any physical problems during the briefing, but now revels that he felt pain throughout his Monday session.
Bedene is also down to play at the Eastbourne International next week, but that is also now in doubt. Asked directly about his Wimbledon chances, the 27-year-old admits that he will likely play the tournament without full fitness.
“I’m still confident I will be able to play. Maybe I won’t be 100%, but year.” He answered.
Should Bedene withdraw from Wimbledon, it will be his first absence from a grand slam main draw since the 2014 US Open.
