Renzo Olivo scored the biggest win of his career by knocking out eleventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the first round of the French Open.
Olivo is ranked at No.91, and though clay is considered his favourite and best surface, he was not expected to unduly trouble Tsonga.
The Argentinean had won the first two sets before Tsonga took the third. Olivo had taken a break in the fourth, before Tsonga came back on serve when play was suspended late last night due to darkness. The match was suspended with the match on serve and Tsonga required to hold to stay in the match at four-five.
Tsonga made a slow start after the restart, going down love-forty. He came back from the deficit but Olivo earned another match point. An Olivo forehand caught an out-of-position Tsonga unawares and a final angled forehand drive saw Olivo move into the second round in Paris for the first time.
Tsonga will suffer the loss of some ranking points, as he made the third round last year.
Olivo will next face Britain’s Kyle Edmund. Edmund was a straight sets winner over Portugal’s Gastao Elias yesterday.
