Qualifying for the Mutua Madrid Open 2017 is a tough draw this year, as a number of well-known players complimented by some rising stars make it one of the most appealing qualifying draws for some time.
Adrian Mannarino is the top seed and he was drawn against young Spanish wildcard Jaume Munar. Santiago Giraldo and Thiago Monteiro are also in the section. Second seed Borna Coric also faces a Spanish wildcard, in the form of Enrique Lopez-Perez. Daniel Munoz De La Nava takes on eighth seed Mikhail Kukushkin and Thomaz Bellucci faces Evgeny Donskoy.
Veteran Russian Mikhail Youzhny plays Roberto Carballes Baena, and there was an early shock as fourth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili crashed out to wildcard Nicola Kuhn. That could aid twelfth seed Ernesto Escobedo’s attempt to qualify. The American plays Ivan Dodig. Andreas Seppi faces Carlos Taberner and there is likely to be a serve-fest when Jerzy Janowicz takes on Pierre Hugues Herbert.
Denis Istomin and Jared Donaldson feature in the next section, whilst seventh seed Andrey Kuznetsov faces the unenviable task of trying to defeat the new starlet of clay, Casper Ruud. Lukas Lacko versus Alexandr Dolgopolov completes the qualifying draw.
