British No.1 Johanna Konta is out of the Madrid Masters after suffering a three set loss to Germany’s Laura Siegemund 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the Spanish capital.
Konta’s match was scheduled late on the first day of the women’s draw and with matches and men’s qualifying going late Konta’s match did not finish until after 2am.
The Briton has struggled on the clay surface this year so far though she looked as she might end her troubles at times against Siegemund. Konta led by a set and then 3-0 in the final set, but the German rallied to win six of the final seven games to knock out the sixth seed.
Sunday’s play sees top seed Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova highlight the main show court. Kerber starts against Timea Babos, whilst Sharapova plays Australian Open semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The final match of the day will see Garbine Muguruza take on the unseeded Timea Bacsinzsky.
Caroline Wozniacki and Dominika Cilbukova highlight the schedule on the second court. Wozniacki is on first after two men’s matches, and Cibulkova plays former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the last scheduled match of the day.
The in form Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sam Stosur are both in action on the third show court.
