Latvian teenager Jelena Ostapenko fended off a match point to defeat Caroline Wozniacki 5-7 6-3 7-6 (7-5) for the third time in her career and reach the quarter finals at the J&T Banka Prague Open.
The opening set was marked by nine breaks of serve in 12 games. Wozniacki clinched the first set on her third set point. Ostapenko broke twice in the second set to force the match to the third set. Ostapenko earned three match points at 5-3 in the decider on serve, but Wozniacki saved them. The Danish player reeled off three consecutive games and earned a match point at 6-5. Ostapenko fended off the match point and opened up a 6-3 in the tie-break before closing out on her sixth match point after 2 hours and 46 minutes. Ostapenko hit 70 winners to 51 unforced errors. Wozniacki produced 21 winners to 17 unforced errors.
Ostapenko will face either number 7 Ana Konjuh or Marketa Vondrousova in the next round.
Barbora Strycova battled past her compatriot Lucie Hradecka 6-3 7-5 in an all-Czech match Both players traded breaks in the third and fourth games of the first set. Strykova converted her fourth break point at deuce in in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. As Hradecka served to stay in the first set, Strykova got a double break at deuce to close out the first set 6-3.
Strykova went up a break on her second opportunity to open up a 2-0 lead in the second set. Hradecka converted on her second break-back point in the fifth game and held her service game to consolidate the break for 3-3. Strykova saved a break point to hold her serve in the seventh game. Both players went on serve until the 12th game when Strykova broke serve at deuce to close out the second set 7-5.
Hradecka saved one match point before Strykova converted her second chance to close out the match in straight sets.
Katerina Siniakova came back from one set down to beat Natalia Vikhlyantseva 4-6 6-4 6-4. Vikhlyantseva got the first break of the match in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. Siniakova reeled off three consecutive games including a break in the fifth game to draw level to 3-3. Both players traded breaks in the seventh and eighth games en route to 4-4. Vikhlyantseva converted her second break point chance in the 10th game to close out the first set 6-4.
The second set started with a trade of breaks in the first two games. Sinakova broke serve on her second chance in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Vikhlyantseva broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Siniakova broke in the next game for 5-4 as Vikhlyantseva made a double fault, before serving out for the set to 15. Siniakova went up a double break to open up a 3-0 lead. Vikhlyantseva got one breaks back in the fourth game for 1-3, but Siniakova held her next three games to close out the match.
Defending champion Lucie Safarova withdrew from the tournament before the Round of 16 match against Krystina Pliskova.
