Argentinian qualifier Guido Pella also had few problems with Italian fourth seed Fabio Fognini. The erratic Italian went down 6-3, 6-2.
Finally, defending champion Philip Kohlschreiber was beaten by another Argentinian. This time it was Horacio Zeballos who beat the German 7-6, 6-4.
The defeats for all four seeds on Thursday opens up the draw for the remaining seeds in the bottom half of the draw. Jan-Lennard Struff will face third seed Alexander Zverev in a quarter that went to the seeding. Second seed Roberto Bautista-Agut, now the ranking favourite for the title, faces surprise qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. The German defeated Gerald Melzer and Thomaz Bellucci for his first ATP quarter-final appearance.
