Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has formally submitted her name for next month’s French Open as her return to the tour gains momentum.

The Czech hasn’t played a tour match since November after suffering an injury to her left hand. At the end of 2016 an unidentified intruder slashed Kvitova’s hand during a struggle between the two. Sustaining ‘severe’ damage to her tendons, the Czech required almost four hours of surgery to repair the damage.

Kvitova’s road to recovery has been a slow and steady one. Her spokesman, Karel Tejkal, recently said her return to the tour remains ‘up in the air’ before assuring that there have been no setbacks in her rehabilitation process.

Eager to return to action, the 27-year-old is now dreaming of a Roland Garros comeback.  Confirming her provisional entry into the draw, the Czech is remaining cautious about if she will be ready in time for the event, which gets underway on May 22nd. Kvitova reached the semifinals of the tournament back in 2012.

“My name will appear on the entry list for Roland Garros tomorrow because, as the entry deadline approached, I had made good progress in my recovery process and I want to give myself every last opportunity to be able to compete at one of my favourite events.” Kvitova said on her Instagram account.
“This unfortunately does not mean necessarily that I will be ready to play in Paris, but that I’m doing everything possible to give myself the chance and keep a positive mindset.
“There remains a long road ahead, but I wanted to share this update with you.”

Throughout her absence from the sport, Kvitova has vowed to resume her career as soon as possible. Twice a grand slam champion, she has also won 17 WTA titles and peaked at a ranking high of second in the world.

“Tennis is a huge motivation for me and I realised while I’ve been away how much I like challenges.” She explained.
“My perspective on life has changed a lot and I am doing everything to give myself a second chance to be back on the court.”

Currently ranked 14th in the world, Kvitova will likely be seeded if she participates in the upcoming French Open.
