Why The First Day Of The ATP Finals Turned Blue

Novak Djokovic’s win over Dominic Thiem didn’t just mark the start of the 2016 ATP Finals. It also marked the newly formed partnership between the ATP and Unicef.

Shortly after Djokovic dropped the opening set in a thrilling 22-point tiebreak, the packed O2 Arena stood in union by holding up blue bags. The idea of the blue bags was to help organisers spell out the phrase ‘Together for children’.

The somewhat unique approach was created by the ATP in recognition of the Super 8 partnership that they have formed with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). Throughout the ATP Finals, where the eight best players on the men’s tour will battle it out for one of the most prestigious trophies, players will help promote the work of the Charity. Between November 13th – 20th, each player will narrate a story to promote the work conducted by the organisation.

“We are delighted to partner with Unicef and to launch the Super 8 campaign at our season finale, as we aim to unite the tennis family in supporting Unicef’s work to help some of the most disadvantaged children around the world.” ATP CEO Chris Kermode told ATP World Tour.
“We are particularly pleased to be able to donate the proceeds from children’s tickets sales towards the campaign.”

Unicef was founded by the United Nations in December 1946 with the aim of helping children in need. It is a charity that is already close to the hearts of some players on the tour. Andy Murray is an ambassador to the UK section and Novak Djokovic is a goodwill ambassador for Unicef.

“I am committed to helping UNICEF provide quality early care and development to children, especially those who are most vulnerable, to help them build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities,” Djokovic said in August 2015.

Earlier this year Murray hosted a charity exhibition in Glasgow to raise money for the charities Unicef and Young Poeple’s Futures. He managed to raise £305,000 in September.
