Henri Kontinen and John Peers looked effortless as they comfortably beat Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 6-3 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Finnish-Australian duo started the brightest by breaking in the fourth game to lead 3-1 in the opening set. After that game six break points were created, however none were converted by either team. As a result Kontinen and Peers, who are the most in-form duo in doubles right now, kept their nerve to grab the first set 6-3.
In the second set, the dominant pair carried on their hard hitting and confidence to break in the first game of the set. From then on they continued to produce more highlights for the packed London crowd to enjoy and Klaasen and Ram showed no variety for their opponents to work with. Kontinen and Peers were hitting tweeners and showing good reflexes at the net and after an 1 hour and 4 minutes they secured victory to win their second match of the World Tour Finals.
Analysis
Kontinen/Peers will now qualify for the semifinals this evening if Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez can defeat Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. They will also qualify if the match goes to a match tiebreak, which we are yet to have one this week. They have played exceptional this week and have now won 14 of their last 15 sets that they have played. Their aggressive brand of tennis has made them favorites for the title for many fans. For Klaasen and Ram they will now need to win their final match to have any chance of qualifying for the semifinals. They just wasn’t aggressive enough today and needed to show more variety to give their in-form opponents something to think about.
Tonight’s match will take place at 6pm local time, as Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez take on Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.
