Home favourite Mikael Ymer thrashed Fernando Verdasco 6-2 6-1 at the IF Stockholm Open.
The world number 549, dominated the match from the beginning as he broke five times to win the biggest match of his career. He executed 73% of his first serves as he stormed to victory over the world number 44. After the match he said that it was his “greatest victory”. The victory secures the 18 year old’s first ATP world tour win of his career. He will now play Ivo Karlovic in the second round.
However his brother Elias Ymer didn’t perform as well as he lost to Tobias Kamke 6-4 6-0. The experienced German won all five of his break point opportunities to secure the win. It will be the world 132’s fourth ATP world tour 2nd round of the season. In the second round he will play Moldova’s Radu Albot.
In other results Gastao Elias thumped Ivan Dodig 6-2 6-1. The world number 61 won 90% of his 1st serve points to dominate the Croatian in exactly 1 hour. He will now play top seed Gael Monfils next,who will want to increase his chances of reaching the ATP world tour finals this week. Also entertainer Dustin Brown worked hard in his 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over big serving Gilles Muller. The German broke four out of nine times as he elevated his game to reach the second round. He will now play sixth seed and defending champion Jack Sock or Malek Jaziri.
Finally Nicolas Almagro survived a scare as he beat Japan’s Yuichi Sugita 3-6 7-6(1) 6-3. The Spaniard hit 18 aces as he beat his Japanese opponent in 2 hours and 18 minutes. He will now play the winner of the titanic clash being played between seventh seed John Isner and Juan Martin Del Potro.
