Germany beat Poland 3-2 on Sunday to secure their place in the world group for the twelfth consecutive year.

The day started with world number 59 Florian Mayer taking on world number 277 Kamil Majchrzak. The pole was looking to avenge his five set loss on Friday to Jan-Lennard Struff, and he started well as he raced to a 4-0 lead. Majchrzak would blow Mayer away in the first set and win it 6-2. But Mayer would not be underestimated and would break Kamil’s serve in the ninth game and hold serve to take the second set 6-4. But Majchrzak would not be denied and won the third set 6-2, to the shock of the German crowd. Majchrzak learnt his lesson from Friday and broke Mayer for 4-2 and would serve out the match, to win the biggest match of his career. The pole’s 6-2 4-6 6-2 6-3 meant he levelled the tie for Poland and secured Majchrzak’s first Davis cup win.

The second rubber of the day saw world number 67 Jan-Lennard Struff take on world number 329 Hubert Hurkacz. It was a pretty tight opening set with four breaks of serve at 4-4 secured a first set tiebreak. Struff overpowered his 19 year old opponent to take it 7-4 on the tiebreak. The second set continued in the same vein with Struff using his power game to break for the second set at 6-4. Hurkacz was holding his own but ran out of gas and the German would serve out the match to complete a 7-6(4) 6-4 6-1 win.

This would ensure Germany’s twelfth consecutive year in the world group. As for Poland they leave the world group after one year. Harsh lessons were learnt for Poland, as Jerzy Janowicz didn’t feature once and tough losses for the youngsters saw a tough welcome to the big time. But in the end they showed determination and proved that this won’t be the only time that they will enter the world group of the Davis Cup. But for Germany they will now enter the world group draw which takes place on Thursday afternoon.
