Petra Kvitova beat Caroline Wpznacki 6-2 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes to reach the third round at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Kvitova got a double break to race out to a 3-0 lead. The Czech player saved three consecutive break points at deuce in the fourth game for 4-0. Wozniacki got one of the two breaks back in the sixth game to claw her way back to 2-4 but Kvitova got her third break of the first set in the seventh game for 5-2 and served out for the first set to 30.
Kvitova earned two early break points at the start of the second set but the Danish player held her serve. Kvitova got the break in the third game at deuce to take a 2-1 lead. She broke again in the seventh game to race out to a 5-2 lead. Wozniacki got one of the breaks back in the next game as Kvitova was serving for the match. This was the only problem faced by Kvitova who served out for the match to love in the 10th game on her second match point. Kvitova hit 43 winners
Kvitova, who will face either Ekaterina Makarova or Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, is on collision course to a clash against Serena Williams in the quarter finals.
