The contenders at the US Open are set to receive bigger pay cheques after the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced a boost in prize money for this year’s edition.
The tournament is scheduled to be held from August 29 to September 11 at the renowned Flushing Meadows, and will offer a whopping aggregate of $46.3 million to the players – just about 10 per cent more than what it had to offer last year.
As per the announcement, the winners in the singles categories will be eligible to pocket $3.5 million, while the runners-up will walk away with $1.75 million as prize money. The semi-finalists will earn $875,000, whereas a sum of $450,000 will be up for grabs for all the quarter-finalists.
The monetary perks for the doubles contenders also witnessed an impetus. While the winners are slated to add $625,000 to their kitties, the runners-up will attract $310,000.
“We are proud that this year’s US Open will offer the richest purse in tennis history,” USTA President Katrina Adams was quoted as saying by the tournament’s official website.
“We continue to invest in all aspects of this world-class event to provide the best services and experiences for the players, our fans and all of the US Open partners,” she added.
The tournament this year would mark the 136th edition of the season-ending Grand Slam here.
