Seeds Stanislas Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych overcame stiff tests from their respective opponents to progress into the third round of the Rogers Cup.
Wawrinka, the No. 2 seed, needed exactly two hours to edge former Top 10 player Mikhail Youzhny in two tie-breakers. The duo exchanged a break each in both sets, but the Swiss prevailed in the battle of nerves over his Russian nemesis to clinch a 7-6 7-6 win.
Up next for a place in the quarter-finals, Wawrinka will face the winner of the all-American duel between Donald Young and Jack Sock.
Berdych, the No. 5 seed, rallied from a set down to upstage 19-year-old Croatian up-and-comer Borna Coric, 4-6 6-1 6-4. The Czech star battled it out for an hour and 55 minutes to improve his head-to-head record by 3-0 against the same opponent.
Berdych fired 13 aces and dropped just seven of his first-serve points to set up a potential date with ninth-seeded American John Isner for a berth in the last-eight stage.
Meanwhile, the Wednesday’s play will see top seed Novak Djokovic open his campaign against Gilles Muller on Centre Court.
