If the latest reports are to be believed, Spain’s Rafael Nadal could give the men’s singles event a miss and participate in just the doubles at the forthcoming Rio Olympics.
Nadal, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, has apparently not yet entirely recovered from a wrist that he sustained earlier this year, reports cadenaser.com.
The injury had compelled the Spaniard to pull out of the prestigious Roland Garros midway through the tournament, and has been absent on the tour ever since.
The rumours come on the back of Nadal’s denial to hit the practice courts with World No. 2 Andy Murray in Mallorca last week.
“He [Murray] arrives today but I won’t practice with him until next week because I’m not ready yet,” the 30-year-old addressed reporters on Murray’s arrival.
Nadal was originally scheduled to partake across all three disciplines at the quadrennial event. Besides the singles, the 2008 gold-medalist was slated to partner Garbine Muguruza and Fernando Verasco for the mixed and men’s doubles events respectively.
The Rio Olympics kick-off from August 5.
