Former Chilean tennis player Fernando Gonzalez has signed up for a coaching stint with countryman Gonzalo Lama. The two will continue to work together until the end of 2017 season, reports ESPN.
Gonzalez, 35, is a former world number five, who is best known for winning three Olympic medals including a gold in men’s doubles at 2004 Athens Games. He also won 11 singles titles on the men’s tour, while his best Grand Slam result came as the finalist at the Australian Open 2007.
Commenting on the partnership, Gonzalez said: “We will begin to train in Miami in the pre-qualifiers of the US Open. This year we will travel a couple of weeks and also work one in the pre-season. I love challenges as a coach and I really like how he plays.”
Talking about their goals, he added: “The idea is not only the top 100, but later come around top 50.”
Lama, who is currently ranked at a career-best 164th position, mainly features in the Challenger circuit. He recently made the headlines for steering his country to World Group play-offs at Davis Cup after the 23-year-old won both his matches against Colombia last week.
