Ace American tennis player, Serena Williams, could lose her World No. 1 ranking at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships 2016 that begins later this month.
The gap atop was bridged by the second-ranked Garbine Mugurza of Spain after she avenged her last year’s loss from the Wimbledon title-clash to beat Williams en route her maiden Grand Slam glory at the French Open last week.
Heading into the premier grass-court event at the All England Club, Williams will be under pressure to defend her crown, or make the finals, at least. Should she be able to do that, she will continue to rest at the crest of the rankings.
However, if the American is sent packing before the finals, and Muguruza goes on to win the title, the latter will dethrone her to take the numero uno position for the first time in her career.
Williams, 34, has been reigning atop the rankings since 173 consecutive weeks, and 396 weeks overall.
