Three members of Britain’s Davis Cup winning side of 2015 have been confirmed as taking part in the 2016 Nottingham Open. Kyle Edmund, James Ward, and Dan Evans have all been confirmed via the tournament’s website as players.
Kyle Edmund will likely earn direct entry into the draw given his Top 100 status, though it appears that James Ward and Dan Evans may need wildcards as they both hold rankings outside the Top 100. The last direct acceptance for the 2015 event was Alexander Dolgopolov who was ranked No.80. The three Brits will be attempting to prove their form in preparation for the Davis Cup quarter-final tie with Serbia that takes place just the week after Wimbledon.
Kyle Edmund lost to Malek Jaziri in the Nottingham first round last year, and James Ward exited at the same stage against Tim Smyczek. It will be the first main draw appearance at the event for Dan Evans.
Ward has struggled since his exploits at Wimbledon last year, where he reached the third round, Kyle Edmund has maintained a Top 100 ranking, and Dan Evans has shown a recovery in form, with good results on the Challenger Circuit.
The 2015 Nottingham event was notable, as it saw two young stars in Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, produce good results. Zverev reached the third round, whilst Fritz recorded his first ever ATP main draw victory against Pablo Carreno-Busta.
Despite the appearance of Ward, Evans and Edmund being confirmed, Andy Murray is unlikely to feature, as his schedule normally only features the event at Queens Club as his major grass tune-up for Wimbledon. The tournament will take place June 19th-25th.
