French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has become the latest player to confirm their presence at the Aegon Championships in June.
It will be the third consecutive year that the Swiss player has played at the Queen’s Club prior to the Wimbledon Championships. In 2013 he reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Grigor Dimitrov. Meanwhile, last year he suffered a shock second round defeat to Kevin Anderson despite being the second seed.
In a statement released by Wawrinka, the 30-year-old said he is hoping that a good run at the tournament will get him on a strong path for the Wimbledon championships, which is two weeks after the Aegon Championships.
“I am very happy to be playing the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club in June,” said Wawrinka.
“It is one of the longest-running and most respected tournaments on the ATP World Tour, with amazing grass courts and a great atmosphere. Also, many players have gone on to do well at Wimbledon after playing Queen’s, and this happened to me the last two years. I reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals both times – my best results at Wimbledon so far.”
Wawrinka will be joined by Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal as the headline acts at the tournament. This year will be the 113th edition of the tournament and only it’s second time as a ATP 500 tournament.
Tournament director Stephen Farrow voiced his delight about having Wawrinka returning to the Queen’s Club.
“Stan Wawrinka is one of the most spectacular shot-makers in tennis, and the third Grand Slam singles champion to commit to playing at this year’s Aegon Championships”. Farrow said.
The Swiss player will also have the chance of rewriting the record books. Since 1890, there has never been a Swiss winner of the tournament in either the singles or doubles.
