French Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah have confirmed that all top four players from his country will participate in France’s upcoming tie against Canada.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils will travel to the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe. Edouard Roger -Vasselin has also been selected as the fifth player in the tie.
Since 2010 France has been runners-up in the tournament twice (2010 and 2014). Their last triumph occurred in 2001. The selection of the venue by France was a controversial one. The tie will be played in Guadeloupe, a territory located in the Caribbean. The choice was criticized by Monfils, who spoke of his unhappiness.
“With great honesty, we are not all necessarily happy to be going to Guadeloupe.” He said.
Despite not being happy with the venue, Monfils has stated his support for Noah and pledged to play in the tie, leading to his confirmation today. Shortly after Monfils comments, French sports minister Thierry Braillard blasted the Frenchman.
“When someone challenges the decision of the coach, even if it is just about the venue for a game, then that shows a lack of respect,” Braillard said.
It is understood that Noah recently spoke with Monfils concerning his comments and both men reached a mutual agreement according to French media sources.
France’s opponent, Canada, is expected to be headlined by Australian Open semifinalist Milos Raonic. The world No.13 has been troubled by a torn adductor muscle since his run in Melbourne, however, he appears to be moving better after recently participating in an NBA all-star game.
The tie between France and Canada will take place between March 4th – 6th on clay. In their previous meeting during the first round of the 2012 Davis Cup, France eased to a 4-1 win.
