German Andrea Petkovic dropped just three games in her convincing 6-2 6-1 win over Italian Camila Giorgi in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, a WTA Premier Tournament.
Petkovic cruised through Giorgi, who held just one service game in the whole match. Petkovic opened up a 4-0 lead in the first set. Giorgi managed to break serve twice in the first set but it was not enough to pose a serious threat to Petkovic who closed out the first set 6-2 with four breaks of serve.
Giorgi managed to win her first service game at the start of the second set but Petkovic converted two of her three break points to seal an easy win.
Madison Brengle came back from 0-2 in the first set and from 0-4 in the second set to upset former top 10 star Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 7-5 in the inaugural match of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. A leg injury sidelined Makarova from the final part of the 2015 season after the US Open and she is struggling to return to her best form. In the qualifying round matches Yaroslava Schvedova edged past Denisa Allertova 6-4 4-6 7-6 and Tsvetana Pironkova fought back from a set down to overcome Anna-Lena Friedsman 5-7 7-5 6-3.
