Roger Federer sailed into the quarter-finals of the 2016 Australian Open after beating David Goffin of Belgium by 6-1 6-2 6-4.
The second seed was fast and clinical in overcoming David Goffin of Belgium in little over an hour and booking himself a spot in the quarter finals.
Day 7 of the Australian Open concluded with yet another brisk and solid performance from the 17-time Grand Slam champion. The somewhat delayed Sunday night session as a result of Novak Djokovic’s 5-set thriller, exhibited yet another impeccable spectacle from the world number 3.
Federer was never troubled, flying off to a characteristic strong start, as he so typically does, breaking the Belgian in the fourth game and breezing through the first set in only 21 minutes.
The sheer quickness in Federer’s game mounted huge pressure on Goffin, both mentally and physcially, breaking his rhythm and preventing him from ever warming into the flow of the match. Federer’s eagerness and restlessness to attack and keep points short made Goffin feel like he was always on the defensive. And that’s the way it went.
The 33 year old continued to keep points incredibly short, storming with confidence and attacking the Belgian from all parts of the court. A beautifully constructed point forcing Goffin to the net and clinching the double break with a stunning backhand lob in the second set, simply summarised how it was not going to be anything but Roger’s night.
The superb Swiss was brutal on serve, facing not a single break point in the entire match. Federer has been consistently serving incredibly, giving him the edge to manifest his sharp offensive game and keep matches of this kind as short as possible.
Roger Federer now sets up a highly anticipated Quarter-Final against big serving Czech Tomas Berdych who battled past talented Spaniard Bautista Agut in an intense 5 set affair.
