Australian tennis legend John Newcombe, former World Number 1 player and seven-time Grand Slam champion (including two Australian titles), is convinced that both Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic have the potential to reach the top the Top 10 in the future.
“If you look back five or six years we were a little bare in the cupboard, especially in the men’s side. This year has been good and the signs are very good looking ahead for next year and year after”, said Newcombe to Associated Press.
Kyrgios reached the quarter final in the Australian Open and the fourth round at Wimbledon and qualified the final at Estroril but was fined and put on probation for comments directed to Stan Wawrinka at the Roger’s Cup in Montreal.
“Everybody is on his side. He is definitely a potential Top 10 player but all the other stuff has to go away because it doesn’t happen when you are going all the other stuff. Everybody is going to to be watching and hoping that he succeeds, and if does, everybody is going to be on his side”, said Newcombe.
Tomic reached the fourth round at the Australian Open before defending his ATP title in Bogotà. In the Masters 1000 series he reached the quarter finals at Indian Wells and Shanghai but he has not beaten a top-10 player yet. The 23-year-old Aussie player has finished the season in 18th position in the ATP Ranking.
“He is probably happy with his fitness but for a guy his size, he has to be exceptionally fit in order to get his mobility moving around the court. If he does that he can get in the top 10”, said Newcombe
