Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza have claimed the WTA Finals doubles title in Singapore after a dominating 6-0, 6-3, victory against Spanish duo Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro.
The pairing, who are currently the world No.1, was outstanding throughout the entire tournament as they didn’t drop a set in any of their matches this week. Throughout the final, Hingis and Mirza won eight consecutive games before their opponents were able to get themselves onto the scoreboard. The top seeds were broken once throughout the match compared to the Spanish team who were broken on five occasions.
Throughout the straightforward final, which lasted sixty-eight minutes, Hingis and Mirza won 63% of the points played (65/104). Furthermore, the dominating team produced 4 aces, won 74% of their first serve and converted 5/11 break points.
The title in Singapore is the ninth this season for the world No.1 pairing. In 2015 the duo has won two Grand Slam titles (Wimbledon and the US Open) and seven WTA titles leading into this week’s WTA Finals. Their latest win is the 49th WTA doubles title for Hingis and the 32nd for Mirza.
Following the comprehensive doubles title, Hingis paid tribute to her doubles partner for her performance in the final. Mirza has never lost to the Spanish team in her career.
“Sania has pretty much an unbeaten record against them, and I definitely felt it out there. I felt the confidence she had going against them”. Hingis said.
Reflecting on their highly successful season, Hingis spoke about the significance of winning the Wimbledon title with her Indian partner. This year the Swiss won the Wimbledon title in both the women’s and mixed doubles. Since the title at SW19, Hingis said that she and Mirza has grown closer.
“The confidence grew with every victory, every tournament. It was getting bigger and bigger. Especially with the Wimbledon title, because I like playing on grass and the way we played. After that, everything just started clicking together”. The 35-year-old said.
“Obviously the first three months, first three tournaments, we were already like amazing. But I think it’s just like knowing. The understanding of each other grew even more. We were already winning from the beginning, but after that was even more and more”. She added
Looking ahead to 2016, the two have admitted that they have not spoken to each other about training together during the off-season. Hingis has played down the significance of this by saying ‘they can go for two months without playing together and nothing will change’. They will reunite in early January as they prepare for the Australian Open. They have also confirmed that will play a couple tournaments prior to the first Grand Slam of 2016.
