Organisers of the Valencia Open have confirmed that the tournament has come to an end shortly after Portugal’s Joao Sousa ended his 2015 title drought by beating Roberto Bautista Agut in the final.
The announcement was made during a press briefing after the final by Juan Carlos Ferrero. This year was the 13th edition of the tournament and has been previously won by players such as Andy Murray, Nicolas Almagro and David Ferrer. Speaking about the decision, Ferrero has lashed out and blame the Spanish government for the end of the tournament.
“We are deeply disappointed to announce that this is the last tournament we see here in Valencia”. Ferrero said.
“More than disappointed we feel cheated by the Generalitat (regional government). We had an agreement with the previous government and another with the current. The tournament and its people have worked hard to be here and have been deceived”.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the government failed to meet the trade agreement. It is claimed that the organisers wasn’t paid 500,000 euros in 2014 and 350,000 euros this year, which has forced the tournament to end. Due to the failed payments tournament CEO David Serrahima, who is also the general manager of sports marketing organisation Octagon, is considering legal action.
It is currently unknown where the Valencia tournament will move to as the tournament organisers look at the possibilities.
“We are evaluating options, today we cannot say country, city or anything in particular”. Ferrero said.
Ferrero also said that he is unsure if the rights to the Valencia tournament will be sold or leased.
