Simona Halep has admitted that she needs to improve on certain areas of her game after suffering a defeat to Agnieszka Radwanska at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Halep, who is the top seed at the tournament, will not progress to the last four in Singapore after suffering two defeats to Maria Sharapova and Radwanska. The outcome is a big disappointment for Halep, who reached the final at the tournament last year. Reflecting on her mixed season, the world No.2 has admitted that she needs to work on her fitness levels.
“I will finish number two or three in the world so it’s pretty good for me. It’s the second year in a row”. Halep said.
“I want to get better for the next year. I have many things to improve. I have to run a little bit more because I need it. Today I couldn’t breathe anymore in the second set.”
The 24-year-old ends her season with three titles, two of which were at premier tournaments (Indian Wells and Dubai). Besides the three titles in 2015, Halep has also experienced disappointment this year. In the Grand Slams she crashed out of the second round of the French Open followed by the first round at Wimbledon. During the Asian swing, Halep failed to reach the semifinals at three tournaments after suffering a trio of defeats to players ranked outside of the top 50.
Discussing her most recent loss in Singapore, Halep said that she was tired and is looking forward to taking a break after a long season.
“It was a good match. I was tired. I go home. I just want to take the holiday now. I don’t want to think about tennis anymore,” A smiling Halep said in her press conference.
Halep also spoke fondly about Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, hoping the she will qualify for the last four. US Open champion Pennetta is playing in the final tournament of her career this week. To reach the last four she needs to win one set against Maria Sharapova otherwise she will be knocked out of the competition.
“I will keep my fingers crossed because I like her. She is a very kind person. She deserves to go to the semis because she won the US Open“. Halep told the media.
