1997 French Open champion Iva Majoli will play on the WTA Tour for the first time since 2004 after receiving a wildcard into the upcoming Kremlin Cup.
The organisers of the Kremlin Cup announced that the Croatian player will play in the doubles draw of the tournament with little-known russian Anastasia Bukhanko. 25-year-old Bukhanko is currently ranked 930th in the world and has only won five doubles matches in her career.
Majoli hasn’t played on the tour since the ITF $75,000 tournament in Cagnes sur Mer back in April 2004. The biggest achievement of the her career was defeating Martina Hingis in the final of the 1997 French Open. In addition to her French Open triumph, Majoli also reached the final of 17 WTA Tournaments, winning eight of them. In February 1996 she reached her ranking high of fourth in the world.
There is no comment from Majoli regarding her decision to play in the upcoming tournament and if it is a one off. Recently it was confirmed that Majoli will play at the World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide next january, a week before the Australian Open. The three-day exhibition will feature current and former players including Marin Cilic, Goran ivanisevic, Marion Bartoli and Thanasi kokkinakis.
