Seventh-seed and World number 17 David Goffin from Belgium converted on four break points en route to clinching a 6-2 6-3 win over Andreas Seppi after 65 minutes in the first round of the China Open.
Seppi earned a break point in the third game but Goffin saved it. In the next game Goffin converted his first break point chance. Goffin held his next service games. In the sixth game Seppi held his serve by saving a break point but was broken in the eighth game to drop the first set with 6-2 after 34 minutes.
Seppi broke serve in the third game but Goffin broke straight back. In the sixth game Goffin converted the break point as Seppi sent a forehand wide to take a 4-2 lead. The Belgian star converted his match point as Seppi sent his backhand return into the net.
Andreas Haider Maurer pulled off the first major upset at the China Open ATP 500 in Beijing when he beat Jo Wilfred Tsonga 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. Tsonga went up a break and got a chance to clinch the first set when the Austrian player served at 3-5 but he was broken back in the 10th game. Haider Maurer forced the set to the tie-break which he won with 7-4. Tsonga, who lost the 2012 final in Beijing against Novak Djokovic, committed many unforced errors in the second set. He called for a medical time-out due to dizziness at 2-4 down in the second set
Haider Maurer converted three of his four break point chances and won 76 percent of his first serve points. He will take Jack Sock who beat Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4 6-3.
Fabio Fognini cruised to a 6-2 6-1 win over Martin Klizan in just 59 minutes taking a re-match against the Slovakian player who beat the Italian star last year on clay in the Munich final. Fognini converted on five of his ten break point chances and saved the two break points he faced. Klizan, who reached the semifinal last year in Beijing as a qualifier after beating Rafa Nadal in the quarter final, failed to convert on his two break point chances.
Home player Ze Zhang overcame Denis Istomin in three sets with 6-3 1-6 6-3. He will play against the winner of the match between five-time China Open champion Novak Djokovic and Italian Simone Bolelli
