Michael Berrer have confirmed that he has delayed retiring from the sport after experiencing a strong 2015 season in which he defeated a top five player for the first time in his career.
During the Qatar Open in January, the 35-year-old defeated Rafael Nadal in the first round before losing in the second round to Croatia’s Ivan Dodig. The German also reached the semi-final of the Claro Colombian Open in July. It was the first time that Berrer has reached the last four of an ATP level tournament since 2012. He also reached the last four of a Challenger tournament in Raanana, Israel at the start of April.
During an interview with German website Tennisnet, the world No.108 said that he still has the hunger to play the sport.
“Actually, the hunger is still there. I get up every morning happy and really please to go training”. He said.
The German has also hinted that he may continue beyond 2016 until 2017. This year Berrer has successfully qualified for three Grand Slam main draws, but lost in the first round of each of them. So far in 2015 he has played 16 main draw matches on the ATP Tour, losing ten of them.
At the high of his career Berrer achieved a ranking best of 42 in the world back in 2010. He has won ten Challenger titles, however, his last title was in 2013. The full interview by tennisnet.de (in German) can be seen below.
