As expected, Spain have gone about their job quickly in Odense after Rafa Nadal and Fernando Verdasco sealed the win against Denmark after defeating Fredrik Nielsen and Thomas Kroman 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Once again Denmark can leave with their heads held high after both Nielsen and Kroman, who has no ranking, managed to put two world class players against the ropes. After all, that is the magic of the Davis Cup, although in best-of-five-set tennis normally experience and class tends to shine through, and that’s how the Spanish put an end to the Danish quest.
For Spain, the doubles rubber has been somewhat of a headache recently in the Davis Cup having lost three of them consecutively before this tie, against Germany, Brazil and Russia.
Now Spain must wait for the draw to see who they must face in July in order to reach the World Group playoffs.
A satisifed Nadal declared that “it’s a strange feeling to play on a completely unknown court and knowing that you have to win. And you have to win in uncomfortable conditions but at the end of the day we’ve accomplished our job”.
As for Rafa’s participation in the 2016 Davis Cup: “I can’t say what will happen in eight months because I have no idea what conditions I’m going to be in. My plans right now are to play Beijing, Shanghai, Basel and Paris. Apart from that, I want to finish the season in the best way possible and continue to work hard and hope that all of this serves as preparation for next season. I’m aware that all I can do this year is work, work and work to head into 2016 in good form”.
