Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki has been forced to end her season early due to a knee injury.
The world No.27 said that she has been plagued by the injury before and during the US Open. During her third round encounter against Barbora Strycova in the US Open she called for a trainer to the court to treat her left knee. Lisicki reached the fourth round before losing in three sets to Simona Halep. The announcement was confirmed on her Facebook account.
“Like most of you know I’ve been struggling with a knee injury before and during the U.S. Open. Ever since I got back to Germany I’ve been taken care of by Dr Müller Wohlfahrt and now Klaus Eder who have tried everything in order to get me ready for the Asian swing. But unfortunately my knee is not ready and I will not compete at tournaments this season. I have great support from my team and we are eager to get me back on the court asap. At the latest at start of next saison”.
Due to the announcement Lisicki will not defend her title in the Hong Kong Open which begins on October 12th. During her 2015 season the German has reached the semifinal at two tournaments in Indian Wells and Birmingham. Indian Wells was the first premier mandatory semifinal in Lisicki’s career. The 26-year-old also set a new WTA record of the most aces during a match in June. Playing Belinda Bencic at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, she produced an impressive 27 aces. She ends her roller-coaster season with a win-loss of 22-20.
