Number 6 seed Angelique Kerber beat Camila Giorgi 6-2 6-4 to reach the quarter finals at the Wuhan Open in one hour and 21 minutes.
Kerber got an early break en route to taking a 3-1 lead. Giorgi earned three break point chances in the fifth game but she failed to convert them before Kerber closed out the first set with 6-2.
The German broke serve at 3-3 in the second set but Giorgi broke back to love to draw level to 4-4. It was the only break for the Italian player in the whole match. Kerber broke again for 5-4 and served out for the match in the next game to reach the quarter finals in Wuhan
Giorgi hit 33 winners but she committed 38 unforced errors. Kerber hit just 10 winners to just nine unforced error.
“It wasn’t easy. Giorgi is a great player and I was just trying to be tough and playing point by point. I am just playing round by round and I will try to play good tennis tomorrow, have fun and enjoy this court and this tournament”, said Kerber
